How to convert a PDF to images
- Open the PDF whose pages you want as pictures.
- Every page starts selected. Select only the ones you need, or leave them all.
- Choose the format — JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF or BMP — then the resolution, and the quality for JPG, WebP and AVIF.
- Select the save button, then Download: one picture, or a ZIP of them.
Which format to choose
JPG opens everywhere and suits photos and sharing. PNG is lossless, so text and lines stay crisp, and can keep a transparent background. WebP and AVIF make much smaller files at the same quality; AVIF is the smallest but slower to make, and some older programs cannot open it. TIFF is lossless, for archiving, printing and document systems. GIF holds only 256 colors, so it suits text and diagrams rather than photos, and BMP is uncompressed, for software that needs it. Every page is drawn and converted on this device; nothing is uploaded.
Current limitations
HEIC is not offered: no HEIC encoder can be shipped under this site’s license rules. The AVIF and, on Safari, WebP encoders are downloaded the first time you convert to them, so that first conversion needs a connection. The browser keeps them, but an update to the site can clear them, so do not count on them offline. A password-protected PDF needs Unlock PDF first.
Common questions
- Is my PDF uploaded to make the images?
- No. Every page is drawn in your browser and turned into the format you choose on this device. Download the result, or use Share on a phone.
- Which image formats can I save PDF pages as?
- JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF and BMP. JPG opens everywhere and suits photos. PNG and TIFF are lossless, so text and lines stay crisp. WebP and AVIF make smaller files, AVIF the smallest. GIF holds only 256 colors, and BMP is uncompressed, for software that needs it.
- Can I save PDF pages as HEIC?
- No. HEIC is not offered, because no HEIC encoder can be shipped under this site's license rules. JPG opens everywhere, and AVIF makes even smaller files.
- Which resolution should I pick?
- Pick for where the pictures are going. 72 DPI is the page at screen size, with the smallest files; 150 DPI is sharp on any screen; 300 DPI is print quality, with the largest files. You can also type your own number.
- Can the background be transparent?
- Yes, in PNG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF: turn on the transparent background and anything the page leaves unpainted stays see-through. JPG, GIF and BMP cannot hold see-through areas, so in those the page is always drawn on white.
- Do I get one image or many?
- One selected page saves as a single image. Several save as a ZIP with one image per page, named after your PDF and numbered by page so a folder sorts them in order.
- Why does my first AVIF picture need a connection?
- The AVIF encoder is downloaded the first time you convert to that format, and on Safari so is the WebP one. Only the encoder comes down: your PDF and its pages stay on this device. Your browser then keeps the encoder, but an update to the site can clear it, so offline it may need downloading again.
- Can I still select the text in the images?
- No. An image is a picture of the page, so its text cannot be selected or searched and links and form fields no longer work. Keep the original PDF for those.
