PDF to Markdown, with the headings kept
PDFCheetah's free PDF to Markdown tool turns the text of the PDF pages you pick into Markdown in your browser — headings, lists and paragraphs kept — and your file never leaves your device.

How to convert a PDF to Markdown
- Open the PDF you want as Markdown.
- Every page starts selected. Select only the ones you need, or leave them all.
- Select Convert to Markdown, then Download the .md file or copy it straight from the page.
Headings, lists and paragraphs, worked out on this device
A PDF records where words sit and how big they are, not which ones are headings. PDFCheetah reads the text each page carries, puts it in reading order — columns one after the other — and turns larger type into headings, bulleted and numbered lines into lists, and the rest into paragraphs with broken words mended. Nothing is uploaded.
Current limitations
Structure is inferred, so a heading set in body-size bold stays a paragraph, and tables come out as lines of text rather than Markdown tables. Bold, italics, links and pictures are not carried over. A scanned page has no words to read and is named in the result: text recognition (OCR) is not available here yet. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened here yet: use Unlock PDF first if you know the password.
Common questions
- Is my PDF uploaded to convert it to Markdown?
- No. The text is read from the PDF in your browser and the .md file is written on this device. Download it, or copy the Markdown straight from the page.
- How are headings found?
- From the size of the type. A short line set clearly larger than the body text becomes a heading, in up to three levels. A heading set at body size, even in bold, stays a paragraph.
- Are lists and tables kept?
- Lists are: lines that start with a bullet or a number become Markdown list items. Tables come out as lines of text rather than Markdown tables.
- Can I convert a scanned PDF to Markdown?
- No. A scanned page is a picture of text with no words in it to read, so it comes out empty and the result names it. Text recognition (OCR) is not available here yet.
