Repair PDF files that are damaged or will not open

How to repair a PDF
- Choose the PDF that will not open, or opens with pages missing.
- Look over the preview of the pages it can recover, then select Repair PDF.
- Check them, then select Download.
What can be repaired
Most damaged PDFs are damaged in their structure rather than their pages: a download that stopped early, an email program that added bytes, a program that saved the file badly. The PDF’s index of where each part is gets rebuilt by scanning the file, stray bytes before the start are removed, a broken list of pages is rebuilt from the pages that are still there, and parts that cannot be read are left out and counted. The result is saved again and opened on this device to check that it works. Nothing is uploaded.
Current limitations
This rebuilds a file’s structure; it cannot recreate what is missing. A page whose contents were cut off shows only what survived, or nothing, and broken fonts and pictures stay broken. A page lost completely cannot be brought back. Password-protected PDFs are not repaired here: use Unlock PDF first. Deeper repair that rebuilds the page contents themselves is planned for the desktop app.
Common questions
- Is my PDF uploaded to repair it?
- No. The file is read, rebuilt and checked in your browser, on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- What kinds of damage can it fix?
- Damage to a PDF's structure: a missing or wrong index of its parts, a broken list of pages, stray bytes before the start of the file, a download that stopped before the end, and parts that cannot be read, which are left out. It tells you how many pages were recovered and what was rebuilt.
- What can it not fix?
- Pages whose contents are missing or cut off, and broken fonts or pictures: those stay as they are, or blank. A page lost completely cannot be brought back. Deeper repair that rebuilds page contents is planned for the desktop app.
- Can it repair a password-protected PDF?
- Not directly. Open it in Unlock PDF with its password first, then repair the unlocked copy.
